Maoists release their draft of a proposed constitution

Kathmandu, 29 May: Maoists Saturday released their draft of a proposed constitution at for a people’s federal state at the Open Air Theatre after earlier threatening to proclaim it.
The main opposition has opted for a French-style presidential system opposed by NC and UML.
The draft prepared by a team coordinated by Vice-Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai was released coinciding with the 2nd republic day and one day after parliament extended the expired tenure of CA by one more year.
Should government and parties proclaim a constitution to institutionalize a republic it will have been prepared by an assembly whose fixed tenure laws renewed not by people but an elected parliament.
Maoists boycotted a state function attended by the prime minister and president at Tundikhel to celebrate republic day.
Following the USA, EU and Japan also welcomed the CA tenure extension.
Maoists Friday secured only a commitment of the prime minister’s resignation without immediately securing it within a firm deadline; they secured a written commitment for a national unity government. .
The main opposition also got a commitment from ruling NC and UML to complete the peace process and draft a constitution within one year.

Personalities honoured on republic day

Kathmandu, 29 May: Cabinet posthumously conferred Nepal Ratna on Ganesh Man Singh coinciding with republic day Saturday.
The Rashtra Gaurab was posthumously conferred on former prime ministers Manmohan Adhikari and Girija Prasad Koirala.
Personalities were awarded for their contributions with decorations and medals.
